Delectable Alien Lips

She finishes the fruit and I stand on Thunderlight’s back to grab her two more which she finishes quickly.

“They taste so good!”

“Yes. I used to eat these until I was sick when I was a boy. There are many more fruit trees in the forest. One day we’ll explore the lot of them.”

“One day,” she whispers, growing pensive again.

I lead her down the path and we talk until we get to the cottage. She’s warming to me. And I’m more than warming to her. I want her more than I did when I set eyes on her first. She’s a vision. I haven’t even thought about my anger towards my parents. My sister, Fryx, or even fairy dust. I’m enchanted.

We dismount and I lead her into the cottage. She gasps.

“No way…”

“Do you not like the spread?”

“I… I had a dream about this. This is deja vu or something.”

“Hm?”

“Have a seat. If you’d like, you may have some wine while I play.”

“Play?”

I flicker the lights on and my cello’s sitting there as I instructed Gilly.

“Yes. I’m not just a drunk and an animal lover. I have a fondness for music.”

“Play me something then.”

“Music came to me as I prepared this for you. It’s been a while since I’ve composed anything original, so bear with me.”

I tip her glass of wine and run my bow along the strings as I sit with my cello and play. She stares at me transfixed, not touching her wine after the first note and staring at me as I play. Her eyes don’t leave me until I finish and when I lean forward, her alien brown eyes water.

“Did I do something wrong?”

“Screw you, Nyx…”

“What?”

She rises from the table and runs outside. I chase after her.

“Reed! Wait!”

She stops and turns to me with her hands balled up into fists.

“This is a game to you, isn’t it? Winning me over? Seducing me? You don’t mean any of this… And that song… You didn’t… You didn’t write that song about me! You probably do this for all your sex slaves. I get it now. You’re a sadist. You enjoy breaking women.”

“You’ve got it wrong.”

“No, I don’t. I was stupid to challenge you. You’ve proven your point!”

“This isn’t about making a point. I wanted you to have a good night. I’m not the cruel, sadistic animal you seem to think me.”

“Liar,” she hisses.

Her words sting.

“Damn it, Reed. Do you think I’d do all of this if I didn’t want…”

My voice chokes. Why? Why does she have this bizarre effect on me. I steady my voice and find my strength to continue.

“… if I didn’t want you to know how I feel about you. We hardly know each other. I won’t deny that. And the circumstances that brought you here are unusual. I’m different from men on your world. I’m certain of it. And my customs may bring you pause… But I want to get to know you. It isn’t a trick. It isn’t a scheme. And I wrote that song for you because… you’re stunning.
